Advent Four "We Believe in Love"

"I believe in the sun, even when it’s not shining”
Author Unknown, written during WWII, on the wall of a cellar,
by a Jew in Cologne.

This year we are preparing to celebrate Christmas
in a way unlike any in recent history.

As we gather around the words of the anonymous poet
and the story of Jesus’ birth,
we will be inspired to nurture
and act upon our belief in hope, peace, joy and love,
even when we are separated and discouraged.

Today's service was recorded with Rev. Nancy & Rev. Carla and Julian Pattison, Mary Sparks and Catherine Branch.

Scripture Readings: Isaiah 9: 2-7 and John 1:1-13

We invite you to prepare a worship space in your home.
This week we will invite you to light a candle of Love when we light our candle during the service.

Join this morning's Worship.

Letter from Catherine Branch, Council Chair

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Council and staff of Mount Seymour United Church, I would like to extend our best wishes to you, your family and loved ones this Christmas and hope that you have a healthy and happy New Year! May you share the gifts of the season: Hope, Peace, Joy and Love.

It has been a trying year, having to restrict our activities, give up our social lives and isolate from our friends and family. But, to quote Dr. Bonnie Henry, we must continue to be kind, be calm and be safe. With the first of the vaccines being administered in various countries, we begin to have hope. We need to hold on to what is precious: family and loved ones, those we need to hold close. To those for whom the season brings even more challenges, our prayers go with you for comfort and peace.

I want to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting the operations and ministries of Mount Seymour United Church. We are blessed to have a generous congregation and so many committed volunteers who contribute their time, energy, and financial resources to help our church provide a shining light and safe spiritual home for the community and beyond. This year has seen an even greater contribution by so many people to ensure that the building stays open, the community continues to be served by the Thrift Shop and the ministry staff and we are all cared for. Most importantly, our ministry staff has gone above and beyond to continue to be in the office and available to whoever is in need. They have found creative ways to allow us to continue our spiritual journeys and have learned new skills to provide us with wonderful Sunday worship. Our prayers and love to: Rev. Nancy, Rev. Carla, Anne, Julian, Marcus, Dominique, and Mary.

As the year ends, I ask you to pray for guidance for Council as we plan for the New Year.

It goes without saying that 2020 has been a difficult year in the greater world. From the obvious devastation of the world-wide pandemic, to environmental devastation from fires and weather, to increased racism and violence in its many forms, to the challenges faced by our neighbours to the south, there are so many that require our prayers and our hopes for a better year to come. These needs also include those in our midst who meet mental and physical health and personal challenges as they move into the New Year.

Finally, I hope that you might have an opportunity to have a quiet moment to reflect on what is really important during this time of year, the celebration of the birth of Christ. May the blessings, peace and love of the season be with you and all who are dear to you!

In Gratitude,

Catherine Branch, MTSUC Council Chair

Star Gifts!

Sunday Worship, January 3 - We Need Your Stories!

Those who attended our Epiphany worship service this year each received a “star gift.”  Each star had a word written on it with an invitation to let the word guide, inspire or challenge your living for the year. Do you still have the star gift you received?  Do you have a story to tell about your gift that you are willing to record for us?

2021 Star gifts will be available for “drive-thru pickup”
on Epiphany Sunday January 3rd from 12-2pm.  Please note:  You will need to stay in your car and we will deliver your star gift to your car.  If you do not have a car, please come anyway and we will give you special dispensation.

We are looking for people who are willing to share something about their star.
Please email or speak with Rev. Nancy or Rev. Carla.

Life is a succession of exclamations from
“Oh No!” to “Help” to “Oh Yes!”

As we enter the new year, we had hoped we would be past the “Oh No!” of 2020.  Instead, we find ourselves with ongoing prayers for “Help!”  The writers of the Psalms knows all about this.

Their sacred poetry will accompany us in this six week Sunday series reminding us that through it all, we can trust and even give a thankful
“Oh Yes!” because God is, indeed, holding our lives.
