~ Nurturing Spirit
~ Being Community
~ Living Generously

For the next several weeks Rev. Nancy will be offering a mid-week reflection to help us explore the deeper spiritual issues being called forth from us as we move through this global pandemic.  This week’s reflection is based Luke 12:22-34.

It may feel odd to move into the season of Easter, a season of celebration, in the midst of these difficult times. Perhaps it is an opportunity to really take into consideration that, at the heart of our Christian faith, we are called to live our lives in the belief that death is not the final word. This is why Christians are called “Easter People.” The tomb becomes the womb of new life. What would we do differently if we really believed that we are loved beyond all endings?  That there is nothing to fear?  Throughout the season of Easter which lasts all the way until Pentecost on May 31st, we will explore these and other questions.  We look forward to welcoming you to our online worship each week.

The scripture reading for Sunday morning is John 14:15-21.

On Sunday morning you will receive an e-mail with a link to the video with the worship service that Rev. Nancy and Rev. Carla will be recording.  We are grateful to have our music minister, Julian Pattison, for music accompaniment.

We invite you to prepare a worship space in your home.  You could place a candle, and light it at the same time that we do during the service.  Perhaps place a special object nearby, grab a cup of tea or something else that might make your surroundings feel sacred.

During this Easter series, if you have a small stone or rock for your worship space, there will be an invitation during the prayers to use this stone.

Prayers for Siblings in Christ
We received news this week from the Pacific Mountain Region about some United Churches in Alberta and Saskatchewan that we have been asked to support with our prayers, love, compassion, solidarity, action and notes of compassion. We remember them in our prayers and stand with them in their grief.

First is for the community of Living Spirit United Church in Calgary AB, who is directly impacted by COVID-19. Chinook Winds Regional Council shared this piece on the tragedy and community response. CTV News Calgary shared this piece, in conversation with Living Spirit church leaders and members.

Next is to the United Church communities in Saskatoon – Grosvenor Park United Church, McClure United Church, St Andrew’s College – who were vandalized with hate speech that targeted God’s beloved LGBTQAi+ and Two Spirit people, and those who are allies. CBC reported on this crime here; below is the letter from the communities affected, shared on social media:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Saskatoon churches respond to Homophobic vandalism—May 10,2020.

These are wearying weeks, and there is grief and pain across our United Church of Canada community. We are moved by the photos below – of the heart grunt work God calls us to. The communities in Saskatoon are tending to their buildings, but more so to their neighbours who were targeted.

We invite you to send your own messages of care and support to Living Spirit United Church, Grosvenor Park United Church, McClure United Church and St Andrew’s College.

Making Your Offering

Our expenses continue even while programming and worship services can no longer be in-person as before.  For a video message from Ward Branch, a member of our Finance Team, please click the above picture or here.  Our church Council made the decision at our last Council meeting to continue paying all staff at this time even though this pandemic is affecting our regular activities.  As the Thrift Shop is closed, we do not have the weekly income from the weekly sales, so please continue to send your offering if possible, as a cheque in the mail, or via e-transfer to or via the donate button on our website.  As always, we thank those of you who make your offerings to the church through Pre-authorized remittance (PAR).  If you are able to increase your PAR givings during this time, you can e-mail Fay Butterfield at
Changes to your existing PAR can be emailed to Fay, but if you would like to start donating by PAR, you need to
print this form and fill it out. Be sure to indicate that it is for Mount Seymour United Church in North Vancouver, BC.  Please mail it directly to the PAR Administrator at the national church office.  Her address is:
