~ Nurturing Spirit
~ Being Community
~ Living Generously

It may feel odd to move into the season of Easter, a season of celebration, in the midst of these difficult times. Perhaps it is an opportunity to really take into consideration that, at the heart of our Christian faith, we are called to live our lives in the belief that death is not the final word. This is why Christians are called “Easter People.” The tomb becomes the womb of new life. What would we do differently if we really believed that we are loved beyond all endings?  That there is nothing to fear?  Throughout the season of Easter which lasts until Pentecost on May 31st, we will explore these and other questions.  We look forward to welcoming you to our online worship each week.

The scripture reading for this morning is Luke 24: 44-53

Rev. Nancy and Rev. Carla recorded the service, and our music minister, Julian Pattison, joined us for music accompaniment. Click on this link or on the image above to join in worship by viewing the video https://youtu.be/1M0HElknop8

For a link to the sermon text, please click here:  http://mtseymourunited.com/may-24-2020-sermon-and-worship-link-luke-2444-53-rev-nancy-talbot/

We invite you to prepare a worship space in your home.  You could place a candle, and light it at the same time that we do during the service.  Perhaps place a special object nearby, grab a cup of tea or something else that might make your surroundings feel sacred.

During this Easter series, if you have a small stone or rock for your worship space, there will be an invitation during the prayers to use this stone.

Next Sunday is Pentecost!
Normally we would invite you to wear red on Pentecost, and this year is no different! We would love for you all to join from your homes, wearing red.  You could add something red to your worship space as well.  And send us pictures – we’d love to see them!

Readers and Candle Lighters
If you are interested in participating in our worship service by reading scripture or lighting the candle in your home, please contact Rev. Carla wilkscarla@gmail.com  You will need a recording device (cell phone works great) and the ability to send the video via either iCloud, OneDrive, DropBox, Google Drive, as the video is usually too large to email directly.  There are instructions to help walk you through the steps.

Plans for Re-Opening Mount Seymour United Church
On Wednesday, May 13, at our regularly scheduled Council meeting we began to discuss the implications of re-opening our building as per the guidelines of the Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, along with recommendations from the National and Regional United Churches.  After much prayerful and thoughtful discussion, we have decided to follow the recommendation of the Pacific Mountain Region of the United Church and continue with online worship services until at least the end of August at which time we will reassess this decision.

Our ministry personnel and staff have been doing a fine job of delivering a variety of virtual experiences over the last several weeks.  Although we know that people yearn to meet face to face once again, we want to be certain we are able to do so in the safest possible manner.  Dr. Henry has been clear that there are to be no gatherings of more than 50 people for the foreseeable future.  With a worshiping community that regularly exceeds that number and a large portion of congregants in the vulnerable sector (those over sixty, those with underlying medical conditions that have weakened immune systems, and those who have family members at home who are vulnerable) this decision seems wise for now.

In the weeks to come our staff will be coming up with protocols for re-opening our building to small groups, as well as the Thrift shop.  Council will be reviewing these re-opening plans for compliance with WorkSafeBC, the Regional and National church and our own desire to keep safety and community needs a priority.  Whatever re-openings there may be, we can expect to see significant changes from the way things have been done in the past.

Council will continue to communicate decisions with you as they are made.

In the meantime, we’d like to remind you that anyone entering the building other than staff must have permission to do so.  Please call or email ahead so arrangements can be made.  This will ensure not only that the staff who are working in the building are safe but that those who need to come in are also kept safe.  We cannot maintain cleaning protocols if we do not know who is in the space.

If you have any questions or concerns about these decisions, please feel free to contact Rev. Nancy, Rev. Carla or Council Chair, Catherine Branch.

Covid-19 Survey

The BC Centre for Disease Control is asking British Columbians to fill out this survey.  It will take 10 to 15 minutes.  In her briefings this week, Dr. Bonnie Henry has been encouraging seniors to take the survey, because they had not received as many responses from seniors.

Here is the link to the survey:   http://www.bccdc.ca/health-info/diseases-conditions/covid-19/covid-19-survey
For help completing the survey by phone, please call 1-833-707-1900, seven days a week between 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Making Your Offering

Our expenses continue even while programming and worship services can no longer be in-person as before.  For a video message from Ward Branch, a member of our Finance Team, please click the above picture or here.  Our church Council made the decision at our last Council meeting to continue paying all staff at this time even though this pandemic is affecting our regular activities.  As the Thrift Shop is closed, we do not have the weekly income from the weekly sales, so please continue to send your offering if possible, as a cheque in the mail, or via e-transfer to
mtsuc@shaw.ca or via the donate button on our website.  As always, we thank those of you who make your offerings to the church through Pre-authorized remittance (PAR).  If you are able to increase your PAR givings during this time, you can e-mail Fay Butterfield at fbutterfield@shaw.ca
Changes to your existing PAR can be emailed to Fay, but if you would like to start donating by PAR, you need to
print this form and fill it out. Be sure to indicate that it is for Mount Seymour United Church in North Vancouver, BC.  Please mail it directly to the PAR Administrator at the national church office.  Her address is:
