Thrift Store Assistant Manager

We are looking for a responsible Assistant Manager to assist and fill in for our store manager when needed and help organize and run our storage shed. They will assist the manager and ensure that processing and distribution systems of donations are more efficient, and customers are happy. The responsibilities will include assisting in hiring and training summer students, working with volunteers, and monitoring inventory.

Our ideal candidate will have retail experience and experience working with volunteers. They will also be skilled at organization, problem-solving and be able to take initiative. Interpersonal communication and mediation skills will also be important as they will often be acting as a liaison between managers, employees, volunteers, and customers.

Responsibilities

Communication: communicate pleasantly with donors; meet and greet the customers; handle complaints; thank customers for their patronage and donations; maintain a positive attitude, regardless of weather and conditions.

Leadership: supervise and motivate volunteers; make sure all employees and volunteers adhere to the store’s policies and guidelines; act as our store’s representative and set an example for our staff and volunteers; open and close the building on time.

Organization: keep the building and donations shed organized and clean; keep the trash and boxes in the appropriate location; sort and pack donations.

Administration: track the progress of weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual objectives; monitor donation inventory; monitor and keep manager up to date on the donations shed’s capacity at the end of each day.

Retail Management: assist manager in planning and implementing strategies to attract customers; assist manager in evaluating summer students’ performance and identify hiring and training needs; analyze customer behavior and adjust product pricing and placement; distinguish unsaleable items and graciously decline them; direct restricted items to alternate facilities.

Requirements

  • Experience with retail: assistant management or similar position would be an asset
  • Deal well with the public
  • Experience with supervision would be an asset
  • High school graduate 
  • Current criminal record check
  • Leadership and organizational abilities
  • Interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • Problem-solving attitude and self-starter who will take initiative
  • Flexibility to work shifts, including Saturdays and Thursday evening until 8pm
  • Ability to do some heavy lifting
  • Social media and some computer/technology skills would be an asset
  • Appreciation of the United Church ethos of openness and inclusivity

Hours & Renumeration

Position:  temporary three-month position, with possible continuation to begin in September.

Hours:  16 – 20 hours/week (with the flexibility to work more hours during the manager’s vacation)

Rate of pay:  $18/hr

Benefits: 3 weeks paid vacation, pension, and health benefits if position continues beyond three months.
