Many people don’t realize that the raven is the first bird mentioned in the Bible. At one point God, fed up with the way things were going on earth, sent a great flood to destroy everything. God was essentially hoping for a do over. God planned on saving only one family of every species: the family of a faithful man named Noah and a pair of every other species on earth. For forty days Noah and his family and all the other animals languished on the ark, floating for an interminable time on the waters of the flood. The rain eventually stopped, and the boat ran aground on a mountain top. But other than being stuck on the top of a mountain, there was still no other land in sight. So Noah sent the raven to scout for possibilities, for land, for hope. The raven “went to and fro until the waters were dried up from the earth”. To and fro, not landing, letting Noah know that it was not yet safe to leave the safety of the ark.
While our creation stories are separate and distinct, the Judeo-Christian story shares in common with indidgenous creation stroes a story about raven. In the Bible narrative raven signals the distance between water and land. In indigenous stories Raven brings light to all the people.

Mag Caron will be our storyteller, reading the work of Graham McDermott. Mag is a member of the Mount Seymour Garden Committee and the Pilgrims’ Path group. She taught for many years at the preschool that was in this building, and McDermott’s book was a central part of their curriculum. We will project the pages of the book so you can all enjoy the words and the imagery.
